GIS Disaster Response

Geographic Information Science (GIS) plays a major role in disaster relief and response. The Gulf Coast oil spill can benefit from the many valuable aspects of GIS such as mapping out animals habitats and locations, getting exact coordinates of the oil spill, and by being able to study the bathymetry of the ocean floor in an up close 3D fashion. Since the oil spill is in the deep water horizon it is hard for BP and Scientists to get an up close look at the situation. With the use of GIS, organizations are able to map out and display to the public the location of the spill along with where the oil is moving and at how fast of a rate. GIS analysts are also using the mapping software to display where booms are located and what areas of shoreline are most at risk. GIS provides numerous possibilities for a fast accurate response not only for the Gulf Coast oil spill, but any geographic location around the world.
